A family holiday tradition for well over twenty years ,The Nutcracker makes its triumphant return. Alberta Ballet with Ballet British Columbia join together to present a total of twenty-one performances of The Nutcracker in five cities: Victoria , Spokane , Edmonton , Calgary and Vancouver during the month of December. The Victoria performance will feature Victoria Symphony.
Under the leadership of Alberta Ballet's Artistic Director Jean Grand-Maître , and with Boston Ballet's Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen's acclaimed choreography, Nutcracker is the biggest and brightest event of the season. Roger LaVoie's original stunning sets are unmistakably festive, from the elegant parlour with the Christmas tree that mysteriously grows, to the beautiful and ethereal snow lit forest through which Clara and the Nutcracker Prince travel, and finally to the Sugarplum Fairy's magnificent palace. Designer Paul Daigle has created exquisite costumes for the many memorable characters, such as the Nutcracker Prince, Clara, the Snow Queen and King, Uncle Drosselmeyer and of course the Sugar Plum Fairy. Local children from each city dance the roles of party children, toy soldiers and other enchanted characters.
From the opening notes of Tchaikovsky's remarkable score to the grand finalé's tour-de-force, The Nutcracker is eternal in its appeal to audiences of all ages. Once again, local storyteller Jim leard will tell the story of the Nutcracker in the lobby, 45 minutes prior to every show.
